Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question we didn’t answer below? Feel free to contact us with any questions you have.

Genotique’s personalized nutrition plans do not conform to one particular diet. We will start by analyzing your genetic results which gives us an unbiased starting point for your body’s response to food and combine that with your goals and other parameters identified in our intake form. If you enjoy eating a specific diet and it works with your genes and goals, we will happily work with your tastes. The best diet for you after we consider everything is the one you enjoy and can stick to!

We will happily work within and respect your food ethos. However, if you are vegan or vegetarian, Genotique’s services might be extra important for you since there are several genes variants that affect conversion from vegetarian forms of nutrients to bioactive forms that are normally available (preformed) in animal products. We will never make you eat anything you don’t want to, but we will make sure you are eating properly to address any of these issues.

Yes, yes yes! Great questions, and we are systems-level thinkers here at Genotique as well! We are keenly following the literature with regards to all of these areas, and attending conferences with the latest updates. We will continuously update knowledge on our blog and interview experts in this field.

However, we believe at this moment in time, there is not a product on the market we would stand behind to offer specific diet advice for you based on these measurements. We are getting there, but there is still more research to be done. If you’ve heard of one, send it to us and we will check it out!

But until we think it is ready for prime time, we won’t sell it to you.

Lucky for you, we are experts in gut health! Contact us for more information on getting gut-specific advice.

Yes! We look at things like your injury risk, your endurance/power ability, your protein needs, and other areas that affect your recovery from daily physical activity and a normal exercise regime. We can also help you with weight management if you want to lighten up to shave some time off your 5k.

If you are an elite competitive athlete you are likely working with a sports dietitian who is periodizing and customizing your nutrition for your sport and your on- and off-season needs. Genotique can provide you with your nutrigenomic information that can be tailored by your sports dietitian to elevate your performance to the next level.

And FYI, we have a dietetics team that we pick from to match the best RD to your unique needs, and it includes a sports dietitian! So, if you don’t already have a sports RD, you can work with one through us as well.

No. The blood type diet has been debunked [1,2] and has no scientific basis. Genetic tests employed through Genotique are based on the most robust, strongest scientific evidence from the field of nutrigenomics.

Not really. In some specific cases we may offer meal plan creation as an option for an extra charge through our dietitians with expertise in this. This can sometimes be helpful in the short term for people who could benefit from a structured approach with a thoughtfully planned set of meals they can build into a routine.

But we are big believers in a sustainable approach. Do you eat the same in January as you do in June? What about if you travel or eat out a lot– can you really follow a meal plan in a sustainable way? Longer term, we hope to equip you to use the knowledge gained from Genotique to inform your food choices as they fit in your lifestyle and goals without needing to follow a more rigid plan. We feel that this is a key to sustainable results, and we are happy to work with you to this end.

We can use your raw data from 23andMe for your DNA-diet analysis. You will be asked to upload your file at checkout. You can purchase from our 23andMe shop here.

You are absolutely correct. And not only can diet influence it, but it can influence your response to your diet! Because we have a background in gut health we are intensely following this research and seeing what is available to consumers that we can provide to you. After surveying everything out there in the context of the literature and what we know about diet and microbiome, we are not quite sure any are ready for primetime just yet. But we are getting there! If you have heard of a direct-to-consumer company you think is great, let us know and we’re happy to discuss. As the research grows so will we, and we promise to only offer you the best.

There is a diversity problem in genomics research, and this affects how we should interpret results from association studies in nutrigenomics. The contribution of certain variants may not apply to particular ethnic groups if those populations have not been well-studied. Because of this, we ask for your ethnicity so we can better evaluate the strength of evidence as it pertains to you.

Follow the instructions here, to have your 23andMe raw data emailed to you!
